Honorable Tamara L. Shewmake
The Honorable Tamara L. Shewmake is a proud native of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia. She graduated from the historic I. C. Norcom High School in 2000, where she earned her Advanced Diploma. She later attended Norfolk State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) in 2010, graduating cum laude. Tamara is also the proud mother of two children, Nyle, and Nia.
Tamara began her professional career in the banking industry before transitioning into the federal, state, and local government sectors. Throughout her career and nearly two decades of community service, she has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to public service, education, economic empowerment, and the advancement of her community.
Over the past 20 years, Tamara has served on numerous boards and community organizations. Her leadership journey began with her appointment as the youngest board member of Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia and continued with her service as an elected board member.
On November 6, 2018, the Honorable Tamara L. Shewmake was elected to the Portsmouth City School Board. That election was particularly significant, as she was the only woman on the City of Portsmouth ballot that year to secure a seat. Her campaign was centered on three key priorities: early literacy, financial literacy, and vocational training through Career and Technical Education (CTE). Since her election, she has remained committed to advancing these priorities through her leadership, advocacy, and votes.
Throughout her tenure, Honorable Shewmake has advocated for equitable access to a high-quality education for every child in the City of Portsmouth. Her work reflects a deep belief that every student deserves the opportunity, resources, and support necessary to succeed academically, personally, and professionally.
Her dedication to leadership and service has earned her numerous honors and recognitions. In 2021, she was named one of Inside Business’s Top 40 Under 40 honorees. She was also recognized as a Cultural Ambassador at the prestigious Women of Portsmouth event and received the Ladies in Red 10th Annual Exceptional Woman Award.
This year marks Honorable Shewmake’s eighth year of service and her second term representing the residents of Portsmouth on the City School Board. During her tenure, she has contributed to numerous initiatives and accomplishments that have positively impacted students, families, and the broader Portsmouth community.
Below are just a few highlights of her initiatives, accomplishments, and continued commitment to the City of Portsmouth.
Personal School Board Contributions
• Introduced the "I'm Okay" initiative to the Board. After receiving approval, Dr. Bracy and his administration developed and implemented the Here to Help program.
• Advocated for dedicated CTE curriculum departments to provide greater guidance and support for Career and Technical Education programs. The Board approved the initiative, and Dr. Bracy and his administration implemented the Pathways program.
• Worked to reduce or eliminate testing requirements for TCC CTE programs. As a result, the Community College Board reduced testing requirements for certain CTE courses.

These accomplishments represent only a portion of the work she has done. She looks forward to sharing more about her vision, achievements, and plans for the future in the coming months.
She is grateful the continued support, encouragement, and trust throughout the years. She is #4 on the ballot, and I would be grateful for the opportunity to continue serving our community for four (4) more years.
